Homeschool Room Idea’s, Let me tell you a little secret…

So I know the title of this post says “Homeschool Room Ideas”. I did that because nobody was going to google “Homeschool House Ideas”, lol!

Although we do have a primary designated school area, to be 100% honest we don’t have a school room per say. We have a school house! You can’t go to many rooms in our home without seeing maps and posters. Even the hallway and bathroom have them! As long as I have kids around I have this philosophy;

Why decorate the house with meaningless trinkets when you can decorate with beautiful educational items of substance that a child will pocket in their memory and serve them long after they have left the nest?

Personally, I love a boho home style and have found it provides the perfect excuse and way to tie education and home decor together! More on that below though…..

The Main Homeschool Area

So about the primary school area. This is on the main floor in our dining room which is connected to the kitchen and the living room. I could have put the school room in the basement, but who wants to do school in a basement?

I also chose this space for the main school area because I have so many children doing school these days (5 counting the preschooler) that I need them in a central location so I could help them and supervise as needed.

Here’s the dining room and some close up shots of items in it.

Homeschool Room Idea’s-Keep It Fun, Keep It Interesting

The school area has gone through many updates since we’ve lived here (since fall 2018)! I update it fairly regularly to keep it inviting for the kids. I especially love updating it with the seasons and some holidays.

I feel like the wall above is a little busy but everything on it is used consistently. The wall hanging is hiding an ugly air conditioner.

I love collecting and decorating with Cavallini posters (Find them here). They are such an affordable and beautiful way to refresh homeschool spaces!

I just use thumb tacks for them so I can update spaces and switch them out fairly regularly. Recently I bought the large cork board above to make it easy to switch them out on our main wall, also as an additional place for the kids to display special work and nature walk findings.

Secondary Homeschool Area’s

So that concludes our main area, but we end up spilling out into the living room and other area’s partway into the day. In our living room even the pillows have something to tell!

Large Homeschool Sofa

We love cozying up on the sofa and reading to each other, it’s our favorite part of the homeschool day!

And we best just not mention books. They are stashed everywhere.

Perhaps this is why out of six kids, only two of them ever complain about being bored (and that’s actually code for “Mom can I play with electronics”).

If I walk into the room and the kids are watching nonsense TV shows for too long, you’ll likely hear me holler “EDUCATIONAL!” (That’s code for “watch something educational”-were pretty cody around here).

The kitchen is definitely a part of our home school. It’s here the kids not only learn a little work ethic, but this is where the science experiments happen (some unplanned and unintended ones too). And of course where the older ones are learning to cook, follow recipe directions and so on.

On a typical day in our home you can usually find my oldest researching or making something “amazing”. And our next oldest is usually writing. The third kid, well if he has his way he will be tinkering on something. And the younger two, well they are growing up too fast with all the older siblings to tag along with and watch.

I don’t know if it’s because we have a learning environment or if my kids would have been this way anyways, but they are all creative. I can never keep enough tape, glue, and weird stuff around for them. My husband and I have this joke that if you give the boys a bag a of trash they will find something “awesome” to turn it into.

I love this quote;

“All we need to do is place children in large room spread with an abundant feast of learning.”

Jack Beckman

Although I do believe children need guided learning too, I firmly believe they need time to not be hurried here and hurried there, they need to be given the resources and opportunity to explore their interests. You just never know what they might come up with!

    We’re having a library/homeschool room built in our new home. I love the thought of creating a dedicated space for schoolwork.

What do you think? I really want to know! If you have feedback or something to add to this post let's hear it!
