DIY Boho Air Conditioner Cover

Before I tell you how to make this DIY Boho Air Conditioner Cover I’ve got to tell you more about the backstory.

I’m picky. Okay, there, I admit it. I didn’t always used to be. When I was a youth I was the total opposite of picky. Maybe it was simply lack of experience. Either way, I’m picky now. Before we purchased our home and when I first saw pictures of it online I bypassed it almost immediately. Overall I liked the house, all except for one thing. Right in the center of the main wall in the main room was this.

Attractive, right?

So as we continued house shopping online, 1,700 miles from our current location, we kept coming back to the online listing for this home.

Finally I resolved myself with the idea that I could find a way to cover this “thing” and we settled on this home.

The day after we arrived in our new home guess what I was doing? You guessed it! Looking up ways to hide the air conditioning unit! I couldn’t find much though-mostly all I could find were idea’s to hide one outdoors. Eventually I came across one site that had a few idea’s but most of them were as tacky as the actual air conditioning unit.

For the first month I kept trying to think of ways to cover this thing.

I knew that my new style was going to be boho, and I absolutely loved all the macramé wall hangings that are taking over Etsy and Pinterest. Suddenly I had an idea! Why not make do a DIY boho air conditioner cover?

This DIY Boho Air Conditioner Cover couldn’t be easier to make. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • yarn (in whatever colors you love-you can even choose a variety)
  • scissors
  • a wooden dow rod or cool stick
  • about an hour-maybe less

The trickiest part to this is figuring out how long you want the yarn and getting that right because it kind of shrinks after it’s cut. You want to decide how long you want it to hang, double that and then add a couple inches for the knot and maybe one more inch for the shrinkage. Make sure the ends line up before you go to do the knot. I have pictures to guide you through the steps. Note that I showed you how to tie the knot with one strand of yarn and with three (I like to use three or more strands for thickness when I make my yarn hangings.

We are really blessed to have super nice weather for most the year where we live. We actually only need the air conditioner for maybe 1/8th of the year because it stays just right most the time and our home is super well insulated. That’s a blessing!

Here are a couple other yarn hangings I’ve made over the last couple years. I love changing them out from time to time! I’m currently dreaming up an extra special one for the holidays!

FYI, did you know it’s a good idea to cover your air conditioner units in the fall? Not only can small vermin come in through them but so can the cold! We like to use interior and exterior covers like these;

  1. OMG! This! This is the cutest idea ever. We don’t have an ac unit like this but we do have a breaker box right in the middle of the wall in our game room and this is brilliant!

    1. Thank you!
So with a breaker box you have more options…you could even do a canvas if you wanted since the box is usually flatter against the wall!

    1. Thank you so much!
So with a window unit you could even use a curtain and just lift it up above the unit when it’s in use!

  2. Super cute! Luckily I don’t have one of those ugly units but this is such a great idea for those that do!

What do you think? I really want to know! If you have feedback or something to add to this post let's hear it!
