It’s been months since we moved from the midwest to the PNW and I feel like our skin is still adjusting to the drier climate! In Missouri we only struggled with dry skin for a couple months out of the year but it’s quite another story here! We have all been so ITCHY since we arrived!
One of my favorite things for dry skin are oil based scrubs. I love killing two birds with one stone and that’s exactly what oil based scrubs do. They exfoliate and moisturize splendidly-at the same time. Best of all, they are super duper easy to make.
A word of caution, scrubs are of course meant to be used in the shower, and if you are using an oil based one you have to be careful because the oil makes the shower floor slippery! You’ll want to be especially cautious about this if you have kids using the shower-or anyone really.
I find using this scrub is especially nice for the days after I shave my legs. I have a tendency to get extra itchy as my leg hairs start growing back and this scrub really helps with that.
Here’s the recipe;
- 1/2 cup salt (you could sub sugar)
- 1 teaspoon ground coffee
- just enough almond, avocado, jojoba, or coconut oil to cover the salt-you can use a mix of oils
- 20 drops essential oil of choice (please don’t use cheap synthetic oils-please use quality ones. Contact Me to learn what brand I recommend as a Cert. M. Herbalist). Warning; Don’t use citrus oils on area’s of skin that you will be exposing to sunlight.
- Optional-herbs of choice, such as a pinch of rosemary, lavender, or even oats.
I like keeping ours in a tin or stainless steel container because if one of my kids drops it and it were kept in glass it would make an awful mess to clean up.
