I don’t think I could be more thrilled to share how to Discover 2 Body Style Secrets & Dump Frump! In this post I’m going to reveal a couple of the secrets that can help any woman-even new mommies still getting used to their post pregnancy body-up her style game no matter her shape or size! Let’s get started!
The Secret French Women Know That Eludes Most American Women
I’m sure most of us have heard all about how the French women have great style when it comes to dressing themselves.
I don’t remember where I read it, but years ago I read somewhere all about their clothes styling “secret”. This is a secret that eluded American women for decades! Unlike the average American woman, their secret isn’t closets overflowing with clothes.
Instead, it’s in a few well made pieces that are tailored to their bodies.
This is why it is so difficult for us mom’s who are in childbearing/nursing years to look put together! Since our bodies are fluctuating all the time, it would be almost impossible for us to have clothes tailored to us! Right about the time a garment was to come back from being tailored by a seamstress it would be time for another size, amiright???!
I suppose a great solution to this problem would be to learn how to alter clothes. I don’t know about you, but I am not crazy about sewing. I definitely don’t have time for it.
Another problem is that as mama’s (especially those of us on a budget like big family mama’s of us out there) have a tendency to shop clearance racks, thrift stores, and good deals we find that look cute on the racks and fit “close enough”.
The results are often not the best. The worst thing about this is so many of us already feel bad about our bodies, but here’s the thing, we don’t truly look as bad as some of the clothes we are choosing us make us look!
So what’s an average American mama to do?
Solution, Discover 2 Body Style Secrets & Dump Frump
I’ve found that when I want to look put together, there are two most important things that it helps to remember when I’m out shopping and getting ready. The first one is to consider my body shape and the other is remembering the height range I fit in. When you think of a woman that is the opposite of frumpy, you can probably bet it’s because she knows and dresses for her body shape.
I cannot remember where I read it, but I read somewhere that most women mistake their body shape. I also read that a majority of women think they are hourglasses but are actually banana, or rectangle shapes. The banana shape makes up for 46% of women!
So the first thing we want to do is find out our body shape. Years ago I found a handy dandy body shape calculator, you can find it HERE. This will help you eliminate all the crazy guesswork! Play with the numbers just a little if you think the calculator is off. Give or take an inch here and there to find out if you are close to being another shape because if you are you might be able to pull off a “secondary” shape with just a couple tricks.
The second thing we want to know is what height range we fit in. Funny story, most my life I shopped in the wrong section, but just for pants. I shopped in the section for women of average height, when I should have been shopping in the petite or junior sections for bottoms! No wonder I hated shopping for clothes and could never find things that fit me properly!
Here are the height guidelines.
- Petite 5ft. 3in. and under (some say it is 5ft. 4in. and under-if you happen to be right around the 5ft. 4 range you may need petite for pants and average for tops or vise versa)
- Tall is considered 5ft. 9in. and up
- Average is between the two
Bonus Tips to Discover 2 Body Style Secrets & Dump Frump
Now that we’ve established these two factors it’s going to be much easier to find clothes that fit us properly. Here are just a few bonus tips to remember;
- Find Your Perfect Hem line. To do this follow these steps, 1. Wearing the heels you intend to wear, measure from your shoulders to the floor. 2. Divide by 1.618. The answer equals your perfect hemline for dresses and skirts.
- Invest in some nude flats or heels (heels if you are petite-even a solid 1 inch heel will make a difference-if you are a pear try kitten heels!)
- If you do want to have something tailored, try buying a size or two up so you can alter it.
- Don’t underestimate the power of a good pair of dark wash jeans. They can be a great go to!
- Maxi dresses are another great go to-they look good on most women. If you are nursing look for a wrap style because they can be worn through all the mother stages, from not pregnant to pregnant and even nursing. I love THIS ONE.
- Never wear things with hemlines that end at the widest points of your body.
- Don’t feel pressured to go with trends that don’t honor your curves-(i.e. skinny jeans and low riders aren’t for everyone!)
- Invest in the book Color Me Confident, it’s got sections that will help you dress for your shape-AND proportions.
- When you are trying on clothes in fitting rooms, be aware many places have slimming mirrors-this is why we sometimes find clothes, and only wear them once before we realize they don’t look as good as they did in the store. So be sure to try something on once you get it home (before you take the tags off)!
- If you have mummy tummy, or are not feeling as fit as you would like, you’ll find garments that are made with better, thicker fabric last longer and hold up to wear throughout the day better (as opposed to super thin fabric).
Why Discover 2 Body Style Secrets & Dump Frump? Because You’re Worth It!
At first, it can be difficult to make the changes in Discover 2 Body Style Secrets & Dump Frump and find styles that compliment our mom/or changing weight bodies. Unfortunately it means being a little picky about what we buy and can take a little more hunting. It also might be a little more expensive, but something I’ve noticed is that cheap-thin or poorly made clothing never lasts very long! On the other hand I’ve found the better quality clothing that I sprung a little more for last years.
Always be sure to check thrift stores too because sometimes you can score brand new, tags still on, quality clothing like these linen pants below. Brand new they were super spendy (over $50 if I recall correctly) but I bought them for $14!
I know it can be tempting to forgo style through the mamahood years, especially in the early years. But this can take such a toll on a mama’s confidence. I would like to encourage you by saying you are worthy of taking a few steps towards looking your best so you can feel confident, Mama!

This made me realize that I have no idea what my body shape is. Thank you for sharing the body shape calculator. Will check this out once I get home. Thank you too for sharing these secrets.
This is wonderful!!! I learned some very important things about my body that I had no idea.
I couldn’t agree more with being picky with what and where you shop. Not everyone understands that the material of the clothing item says a lot.
These are all great tips! I need to work on my wardrobe and get out of my yoga pants more often 🙂
Love seeing all these pictures of you! Thanks for the inspiration! What about the built like a 10 year old boy body style? LOL! I don’t think I have a frumpy style but I definitely go for comfort over stylish!
I needed this because I’m STUCK in a mommy frump.
I am guilty of some of the things on this list (shopping for sale items, etc). Now that my kids are getting older, I am appreciating the value of better clothing.
These are great tips! Ive always had trouble finding pants that fit. I’m right at 5’4” so I think I’ll try the petite section now.
These tips are great! I’ve always shopped petite since I’m 4’11”. Usually I’m a jeans and a tucked in sweater if it’s cold out kind of mom!
Love your article. It’s so on point. And from a fellow shorty over here, getting things from a petite section really does make all the difference. I’ve been getting stuff from Stitch Fix and I love it. I’ve finally got some great fitting petite pants and some really fun shirts. It really is about dressing for your shape and size. Because you can be gorgeous no matter what. You just need flattering clothes.
Yes! So true!!
Thanks for the link to the body calculator. That’s so helpful. I’ve gone to purchasing fewer pieces that are quality that I can mix and match.
You are welcome! I am glad you found it helpful!
Thrift stores are my go too! So easy to mix up what you wear without spending a fortune!
SO many tips. I am queen of shopping clearance- thanks for the new perspectives.
I love shopping clearance racks too! I don’t often find things other than tee shirts in my size, but I’ve found some amazing scores on them before!
Love the motorcycle jacket and the tan linen pants. something I would buy for sure.
I have to wear “petite” or “short” jeans, but being 5′ 2″ it’s still difficult. I swear “petite” is just 5’4″! These are some cute outfits though!
Great tips! It was so hard the first few years after having kiddos finding clothes because my body was always changing!
I would love to feel more confident in my appearance. Discover 2 sounds like the answer.
WOW! What helpful information on clothing and styling!! Thank you!
I think we just have to get out of the comfort zone, and to think a little bit more on how we look, great tips!
I loved reading this!! Saving it to use that calculator…I never realized I could be shopping in the petite section since I am 5’4 (and that’s pushing it haha!).
Lol, Clair! You look taller than that!
I still haven’t found my “Mom look”. I’m frump on most days… yoga pants and a tee.
This was a great read. I feel like I needed these fashion tips because I have been in a rut lately.
The body shape finder is pretty neat. I had never looked it up before.
This is SO insightful!! I’m all about dressing for my shape. It makes me feel more confident.
Same here! It makes such a difference!
Great tips! After having kids, it’s sometimes hard to dress your changed body! I love fashion and you are so right that tailoring makes such a difference.
I need to do this, but my sweat pants are so comfy! So I probably do look frumpy, but I’m okay with it. I do put on jeans when I go out at least 😉
This sounds awesome and thanks for the extra tips. Maxi dresses are my go-to and when I find one that fits really well and tucks in at the waist just right… I pretty much love in it all summer!
I love maxi dresses and skirts!
