We’ve been a little busy in the kitchen lately! It’s been a lot of fun putting our touches on our home-which in many ways still feels new to us, and lately we’ve made some stunning boho kitchen updates with industrial touches. I’m so excited to share the updates with you today!
You all know how I love boho style because of it’s historical ties…but if you are a little hazy on the term let me explain….
What is Bohemian Anyways?
Are you wondering what “Boho” style means?
According to the Spruce and other sources it is French for Bohemien. It originally referred to gypsies and peoples traveling from Bohemia-a region in the Czech Republic.
According to Britannica, Bohemia was a historical country in Europe and was part of Czechoslovakia. Originally the peoples of the region were Celts.
I find this such a fun fact because my grandmother on my mom’s side was Serbian, her parents came from the Czech region.
Again from Spruce, the word “bohemian” eventually expanded to include artists, writers, actor’s and musician (generally poor ones) who led a traveling lifestyle. All of these things are or have been me in times past with the exception of actor. I don’t play as much music as I used to because I’m so busy raising my wildlings and making sure they learn music, but I will play again more often someday.
I don’t travel much any more either, but I used to. I’m currently traveling to far away places through books in our homeschool, but someday my husband and I look forward to hitting the real roads again.
Let’s get back to talking about boho history…..so of course later, much later, in the 50’s the term made a comeback, and this is the era of boho we are all very familiar with.
My parents grew up in the 60’s & 70’s, and nobody that knew them then would disagree-they were definitely very boho! One of my favorite pictures of my parents is one of them both in bell bottoms (mom’s were tie dyed).
Mom was not a traditional gal either. She was doing things like making sprouts and juicing carrots and feeding me carrot juice in a bottle way back when being health conscientious was called being a “health nut”!
Boho & Sustainability
One of the things I read was that the sustainability movement has ties to bohemian lifestyle because the boho’s were poor and didn’t have much, and since they traveled the couldn’t have much. Of course now many are seeking sustainable lifestyles because of the desire to reduce carbon footprints.
I remember the first time I became aware of the concept of living more sustainable. I was around 10, and I heard Pass It On Down by Alabama. Since my happy place had always been playing in the woods the song made a lasting impression on me.
Stunning Boho Kitchen Updates With Industrial Touches
I found the kitchen was kind of tricky to add a boho eclectic flare too. I think it’s because boho is nowadays often so much about collections, but I didn’t want the kitchen to be cluttered-especially since it is small.
I also wanted the countertops to be as free as possible within our family’s practical needs. I guess you could say I wanted a real-traditional boho vibe.
It’s been a challenge finding the right balance! I feel like I finally nailed it though.
Of course, what kind of boho kitchen would it be without some microgreens (aka “sprouts), right?
I have a video I’ll be publishing soon. In it I’ll be sharing tips for how to boho up your kitchen, so be sure you are subscribed to my channel on YouTube so you don’t miss that!
Kitchen Deep Cleaning
Recently we did a deep kitchen clean and organization. We had a problem where the kids kept putting things away from the dishwasher in a new place every time. This made meal preparations a nightmare for me!
So this prompted me to go through and minimize, simplify and organize the kitchen. Since this is a small kitchen and we are a big family it’s pretty critical that it’s organized well, otherwise efficiency becomes non existent.
As I was organizing, I created a YouTube series featuring some great idea’s I came up with as I was going along. You’ll want to be sure you’ve subscribed to my channel because I really believe the hacks I came up with will make any kitchen, big or small run more efficiently, especially if people besides yourself are using the kitchen.
