The 4th of July is one of my favorite days to gather with my family, enjoy good food, and celebrate our nation. I’ve learned over the years that the best way to actually enjoy the day… is to plan and prep ahead. That’s why I’m sharing our full make-ahead Independence Day menu—with a few tricks and treats I’ve learned along the way!
This isn’t just a menu plan—it’s become our family tradition! Watch the video to see what I’m talking about!
4th of July Menu Favorites!
About the Menu + Tips
The Star of the Show: The Hot Dog Bar
Several years ago, I discovered the brilliance of the Hot Dog Bar. And friends, let me tell you—it changed everything. Why? Because most of the work can be done ahead of time.
I like to party on the 4th, not cook all day. So I prep this over a couple days leading up to it. The key? Options.
Favorite Hot Dog Toppings:
- Chipotle Sauce: Just blend chipotle peppers with sour cream (or mix mayo + sour cream). It’s creamy, spicy, and perfect on everything—including chips or tacos!
- Caramelized Onions: We sauté thin-sliced onions and pair them with German mustard for a German-style dog.
- Peppers: We love slicing up hot Serranos or jalapeños for a kick.
- Mozzarella cheese: To balance the heat of the chipotle sauce.
- Homemade Buns: Yes, I make our own buns —higher hydration dough is key.
Potato Salad-Here’s Two Potato Salad Tricks
Yes—two. Because potato salad can be a showstopper if you do it right:
- Dice your potatoes small for faster, more even cooking.
- Marinate while warm: Mix warm, freshly boiled and strained potatoes with dill pickle relish (or apple cider vinegar) and fresh dill before chilling. Once it’s completely cooled, add your homemade mayo and other ingredients—it’ll coat beautifully without soaking in! This adds more levels of flavor to the salad.
Want to jazz it up? Add:
- Bacon bits
- Chives
- A touch of sour cream
Hard Boiled Egg Tricks
Whether it’s deviled eggs, or eggs for the potato salad, the 4th of July wouldn’t be the same with out EGGS! here are two egg peeling tricks to help you out.
- The Shake Method: Put eggs and water in a jar and shake. It’s hit or miss with fresh eggs though—sometimes they fall apart.
- The Soak Method: Crack the shell all around, soak in water a few minutes, and then peel starting at the top smaller tip of the egg. Works beautifully.
Easy Cabbage Salad
This one is a favorite because it’s crunchy, easy, and comes together fast. Here’s what we do:
- Shredded cabbage
- Black olives (just crushed—not fancy!)
- Shredded cheese (cheddar, feta, or mozzarella)
- Bacon bits
Then toss it in a quick creamy dressing:
- ½ cup Italian dressing
- ½ cup mayo
Assemble it right before serving to keep the textures fresh and the flavors bold! You can get the full recipe HERE.
🍓 Strawberry Cheesecake – My Festive Twist
I’ve made a cheesecake every 4th of July for decades—but last year I did something different… and it was a HIT. I made Strawberry TIRAMISU! The ingredients were simple;
- Mascarpone cheese
- Heavy cream (equal parts with mascarpone, sweetened to taste)
- Dehydrated angel food cake (just slice and leave out overnight)
- Fresh strawberries
- A little sugar (to keep the berries from browning)
Assembly:
Layer like a lasagna—cake, cream, berries. Next time, I’ll blend some strawberries into a syrup and pour it over the cake for extra flavor.
It’s light, festive, and easy to prep ahead! Watch the video above to see how I made it.
Homemade Mayonnaise (The Easy Way!)
This is part of the special touch to the hot dogs and potato salad. No immersion blender here—I use my food processor to drizzle in oil slowly for that perfect creamy texture. The secret ingredients?
- 2 farm-fresh eggs
- 1 cup light olive oil
- 1 cup avocado or safflower oil
- Raw apple cider vinegar (important for food safety!)
- Salt, onion powder, mustard powder, garlic salt (optional)
This makes a huge batch—perfect for your potato salad or as a dip.
Grilled Pineapple
Last year, we added a new item to the menu, grilled pineapple! If you’ve never had grilled pineapple, you must give it a try! It’s so wonderful! You could drizzle some honey on it if you like.
I hope I’ve given you some ideas you’re excited to try this year! Happy 4th of July, friends 🇺🇸! Let me know what’s on your 4th of July table this year!
