I thought I’d share Large Family Laundry Tips Plus A Natural Whitener Recipe because laundry is a task that makes most mom’s sigh, but if you have a growing family and don’t know these large family laundry hacks this chore can be particularly burdensome! Through the years I’ve developed a laundry system that worked efficiently for our family for a long time. It even accommodated the seasons we were doing cloth diapering! Best of all, I rarely had to sort laundry before washing with this system because with this system it was pretty much done as clothes went into the hamper. The system was so easy to use that even the youngest kids could sort laundry.
Eventually we moved and ended up with a completely different laundry set up. I’m still working on a routine that works now, be sure to subscribe to my newsletters because I’m publishing more posts on the laundry issue soon! If you subscribe you won’t miss the posts when they are done!
Here’s the system….

Since our family strives for a more natural, holistic home, I’ve got to tell you what I’ve learned about laundry detergent over the last year. I’ve learned that laundry products are considered some of the top pollutants in the home. Check out THIS article. Also, you can use THIS APP to scan your laundry detergent and see if it’s safe or not. Most out there are not!
This is because when we wash our clothes and use fabric softeners and drier sheets, these products remain on the clothing, absorb into our skin and outgas 24/7. So many of the ingredients in laundry soap and fabric softener are so toxic, and even linked to cancer.
Here are some of our favorite, non toxic alternatives!
Although the Thieves is my favorite for the scent, I also love this detergent!
Instead of fabric softener, we have found that wool drier balls work just as well and save us so much money! We like to scent them with essential oils to give our laundry an extra fresh scent. Our favorite laundry oils include Young Living’s Purification, Thieves, Citrus Fresh, as well as single oils of lavender, palmrosa, bergamot, and geranium! Get these oils HERE.
The only thing about the drier balls is that it’s good to have around 9. I recommend getting two packages of 6 so you have a few extra. It seems like one always get’s lost in a clean sheet, or like some get used as toys by the little kids!
Okay, so I promised I’d share my recipe for whitening whites! It’s super simple!
- 1/2 cup lemon juice
- 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide
- 1/2 cup baking soda
Simply start a load of laundry and pause it to add these ingredients during the wash cycle! For super whitening power I’ll add it during rinse too and add an extra rinse cycle.
Happy Laundering! 😀 BTW, if you enjoyed this post be sure to check out my other Modern Homemaking and Minimizing and Organizing posts!
