How I Created My Cozy Cottage Kitchen (Under $70!) by Shayla
For a long time, I couldn’t figure out why my kitchen wasn’t fully landing. For four years, I’ve had a vision of the perfect earthy country cottage kitchen in my head. Four years of trying different things, moving items around, thinking I nailed it only to have to change things for logistical reasons or other reasons, I just kept feeling like something was missing, and I was never quite getting the look I had in my head just right.
I had:
- warm wood
- open shelving
- cozy elements
- earthy colors
The aesthetic I was dreaming of felt so clear in my mind, but I just couldn’t manifest it in real life. On paper, it should have worked. But in real life, it still felt unfinished. What I was missing wasn’t another item — it was clarity. That’s when I started using ChatGPT almost like a free home stylist.
How I Created an Earthy Cottage Boho Kitchen That Calms the Home

There’s something special about a kitchen. It’s where meals are made, conversations happen, children wander in and out, and the pace of the home is quietly set. And yet, for so many mothers, the kitchen is also the place where overwhelm builds—harsh lighting, visual clutter, constant noise.
I didn’t want a “perfect” kitchen. I wanted one that felt practical. But I also wanted the space to feel peaceful. Inviting. Cozy. A place that called my family in. So this is how I slowly transformed our kitchen into a cozy, earthy, cottage boho space—not through renovation, but through intention, warmth, and small faithful choices.
Step 1.
I took my time. I didn’t run out and make a bunch of purchases to create the look; I created it over the years of finding primarily $2 to $5 dollar thrift and dollar store finds. Also, we were patient and never gave up looking for deals.
And deals we found! Even the cabinets were about 93% discounted! The large pendant light? It took about 3 years to find, but it was super affordable in the world of pendant lights!
I Never Gave Up
As soon as a space starts feeling stale or looking off, or simply not working, it becomes easy to overlook how we are so blessed to have a home, and of course, it’s time to pause and count blessings!
But I also find it helps things A LOT to take a little time to move things around! Maybe not necessarily buy something new, but simply change things up.
Step 3.
Get an outside opinion. And this is where ChatGPT came in! One day, as I was trying to pinpoint what the kitchen was missing, I decided that maybe ChatGPT could help. So I snapped a picture, explained the look I was going for, and not only did ChatGPT give me a run down, but it even gave me a picture to go off of. First, here’s what it taught me;
What Makes a Kitchen “Earthy Cottage Boho”?
Earthy cottage boho is soft, layered, and deeply lived-in. It blends vintage charm with natural elements and gentle imperfection.
Think:
- warm woods
- linen and cotton textiles
- trailing plants
- collected pottery
- golden light
Nothing overly styled. Nothing harsh. Everything intentional.
Practical Ways to Create an Earthy Cottage Boho Kitchen
1. Add Soft Textiles First
Textiles calm a space faster than anything else.
- A vintage-style runner rug
- Linen or gauze curtains that soften light
- Textured dish towels (waffle, fringe, block print)
- Cushions or sheepskins on stools
If your kitchen feels loud or echoey, it needs fabric.
2. Let Plants Trail and Wander
Boho greenery is not neat—it moves.
- Pothos plants cascading from shelves
- Terracotta or woven planters
- One plant that truly drapes and softens the room
- Dried herbs or olive branches for height
Living plants signal life and calm to the body.
3. Style Shelves Like a Story, Not a Display
Open shelving should feel collected, not curated.
- Mix plates with cutting boards and pottery
- Stack some items, lean others
- Add one unexpected piece—art, a framed textile, or a vintage object
A boho kitchen looks used, because it is.
4. Warm the Lighting (This Is Essential)
Boho kitchens glow—they don’t glare.
- Use very warm bulbs (2200–2700K)
- Add a small lamp on a counter or shelf
- Choose woven or perforated shades when possible
Soft light tells the body it’s time to rest.
5. Add One Soulful Vintage Piece
Every boho kitchen needs something with a past.
- An old stool
- A bread board
- A stone crock or enamelware bowl
If it feels like it belonged to someone before you, it belongs.
Luckily for me, I had all of these pieces but I just didn’t have all of them in the kitchen.
The Different Styles of Boho (Starting With Cottage)
Did you know that not all boho looks the same? Here’s a simple breakdown:
Cottage Boho
Soft, romantic, and nurturing. Linen, florals, baskets, warm woods, and gentle light. Perfect for family homes and cozy kitchens.
European Boho
Old-world and artisan-driven. Dark woods, pottery, stone textures, and collected objects that feel centuries old.
Desert Boho
Minimal and sun-washed. Clay tones, terracotta, warm whites, and sculptural plants inspired by the Southwest.
Mountain Boho
Rustic and grounded. Heavy wood, stone elements, deep earthy colors, and cabin warmth softened with textiles.
Why a Kitchen’s Atmosphere Matters
A kitchen doesn’t just feed the body—it affects the nervous system.
When a space is filled with:
- cold lighting
- sharp contrast
- cluttered surfaces
the body stays subtly on edge. But when a kitchen is layered with warmth—wood, plants, soft light, familiar textures—the nervous system receives a different message:
You are safe here. You can exhale.
This matters deeply, especially for mothers who spend hours each day in this space.
A Biblical Foundation for Creating Beauty in the Home
Scripture never treats beauty as frivolous.
“Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us.”
Psalm 90:17
The work of our hands—including homemaking—is worthy work. God Himself values skill, craftsmanship, and thoughtful creation:
“I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability, intelligence, and craftsmanship.”
Exodus 31:3
Creating a beautiful kitchen is not about impressing others. It is an act of stewardship, order, and care.
“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established.”
Proverbs 24:3
Why Beauty in the Kitchen Is Not Vanity
Scripture reminds us:
“Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a fattened ox and hatred with it.”
Proverbs 15:17
A peaceful kitchen supports love.
A calm space invites patience.
A warm environment helps regulate weary hearts.
Beauty doesn’t demand perfection—it offers rest.
When the Space Softens, So Do We
There is something deeply grounding about:
- natural materials
- warm shadows
- living plants
- familiar, well-loved objects
These things quietly say: You are home. An earthy cottage boho kitchen becomes more than a room. It becomes a refuge—feeding bodies, calming nerves, and honoring the work God has placed in our hands.
What ChatGPT Helped Me Realize
ChatGPT didn’t tell me to redo my kitchen. It helped me understand:
- That my space was leaning rustic, but needed more softness
- That boho wasn’t about adding decor, but adding movement and texture
- That cottagecore needed to show up in textiles and light, not clutter
- That plants weren’t just decorative — they were grounding
That’s when things finally clicked.
I stopped chasing inspiration photos and started making small, intentional shifts:
- Adding trailing pothos instead of more countertop items
- Warming the lighting instead of changing finishes
- Softening shelves with fabric, art, and imperfect pieces
- Letting the kitchen feel lived-in, not styled
Why This Finally Worked
What I realized is that style isn’t about more — it’s about alignment. Once I understood the why behind earthy, boho, and cottagecore elements, my choices became clearer and calmer. ChatGPT helped me slow down, evaluate what I already had, and finish the story my kitchen was already telling. And that’s when it finally felt complete.
