Back-to-School Snacks for the Whole Family
Back-to-homeschool season is always a busy time in our house. I like to prep plenty of healthy snacks for kids—things like muffins, trail mix, and granola bites—so they have easy fuel between lessons.
Watch this video for some of the snacks;
But as I filled containers for the kids, I realized something was missing: a quick protein snack for me.
I’ve been struggling to hit my protein goals lately. By the end of the day, I sometimes realize I’ve fallen way short, which leaves me drained and low on energy. I didn’t want another processed bar from the store—I wanted something wholesome, affordable, and homemade. That’s when an old memory came rushing back.

A Whey Protein Snack I Never Forgot
When I was a kid, my mom got me hooked early on what we dubbed back in the 80’s as “health nut food”. I kid you not when I tell you that one of my FAVORITE stores was the hippy health food coop store!
Around age 10, my mom began teaching me how to follow recipes, and one day I came across a healthy snacks cookbook. Towards the back, I found some peanut butter sesame whey protien snacks that stuck with me. They were SO good and no bake!
They were so good that I never forgot them.
So recently, as I searched for a way to boost my protein, I thought: Why not recreate those bars?
Healthy Peanut Butter Protein Bars
A little experimenting in the kitchen with that old recipe from memory led to these homemade whey protein bars—and they taste almost exactly like the ones I made as a kid, only even healthier. The flavor reminds us all of buckeyes, but with way less sugar and a whole lot more protein.
These bars are:
- High in protein – thanks to quality whey protein powder
- Perfect for on-the-go – just grab one from the fridge when you’re busy
- Budget-friendly – much cheaper than store-bought protein snacks
- Kid-approved – they taste like dessert, so even my kids sneak them
- Collagen Packed-so you don’t have to remember to take your collagen every day
- Essential Fatty Acid infused-another thing you won’t have to remember to take!
Honestly, I do not like sweets, but these healthy bites-they are really good!
Why Make Your Own Protein Bars?
There are plenty of reasons I’ll keep these in my rotation:
- No weird ingredients – Unlike packaged bars, I know exactly what’s in these.
- Tastes like dessert – The peanut butter + protein combo is irresistible.
- Supports my health goals – Getting enough protein, collagen, and essential fatty acids daily makes a huge difference in energy, mood, and focus.
- Nostalgic & fun – They remind me of experimenting with food as a kid, which makes them extra special.
If you’ve ever wished protein bars could taste like candy, this is your answer.
