I’ll never forget our first Easter. We only had two children at the time, and I’ll always remember how tiny, sweet, and excited the children were as they hunted for the eggs! Perhaps it stood out as an extra special event to me because both my husband and I grew up in homes where our parents religion didn’t allow certain holidays like Easter, and Christmas, so when we first started out on our parenting journey, we didn’t celebrate many holidays either.

I can remember that as we watched our children grow I began to feel like there was too much they were missing out on, and like it was needless. The last thing a parent wants is for their sweet babies to grow up and fly the coop as soon as they can because mom and dad never did anything fun for them!

So my husband and I talked about it and how we could begin adding some fun traditions that our kids could look forward to and enjoy, and decided to start easing into some holiday’s with the condition that we would always look for ways to emphasize Christ in Christian holidays.

We are so glad we did this for our children! We were missing out before!

For our first Easter, instead of a regular Easter egg hunt, we did a Fruits of the Spirit egg hunt. After coloring the eggs I wrote the Fruits of the Spirit on all the eggs, and as the children would find them I would read to them what the egg they found said (they were too young to read).

After that first Easter we started getting together every Easter with my husband’s cousins, and it didn’t take long for them to begin going all out, making Easter extra special for our children.

Last year we moved and no longer live near our cousins in the Midwest, and so as Easter approaches this year I find I’m missing the cousins very much, and I suspect my children will be missing them too come Easter Sunday, so I’ve decided to bring back a Fruits of the Spirit hunt again to keep things festive and hopefully upbeat.

Although my two oldest vaguely remember our first Fruits of the Spirit egg hunt, they were too little to fully understand the Scriptural aspect, and of course the last four children have never experienced it, so I think it’s a great time to reiterate it!

Yesterday we colored our eggs. I’m not sure who has more fun doing this, me or the children! It’s so enjoyable to watch their sweet wonder and fascination as they color away!

This year I found THESE RE-USABLE EGGS. Being the frugal mama-time and money wise-that I am I decided to invest in them since we have so many children and so many more Easter’s ahead! These eggs worked better for writing on than regular eggs too.

I decided to add a new twist this year per the request’s of the children that there be “candy” like there was at the cousins. So each Fruit of the Spirit egg the kids find has a corresponding treat! I put the treat list with the Galatians 5:22-23 on a watercolor painting that I did myself for the kids. We will read this before the hunt, and of course after since they will need to in order to know which treats they get!

I included it below as a pdf that you can download if you like. I kept the treats kind of non specific so you can get healthier options like THESE, THESE, and THESE if you like. If you decide to download my pdf below please be a doll and subscribe to my mailing list!
