Hello homemakers! If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed trying to stretch your grocery budget and still feed your family well, you’re not alone. I’m Shayla, and I’ve learned how to feed my family of eight on just about $13 a day—and I want to share how you can too.

For the most part, we use Azure Standard (WHAT IS AZURE STANDARD?) to help us save money almost every month, but there are other ways to shop! You don’t have to order from Azure Standard to feed your family on a $13 a day budget. The real secret is knowing where to look.

Did you know that most grocery stores have an aisle that can save families thousands?

Most people don’t even notice the hidden grocery aisle that saves $1000s because at first glance, they look unapplicable and unappealing. So what are these aisles? They are the industrial or bulk section that many shoppers walk right past because they see the word “Industrial” and figure that doesn’t apply to them.

This aisle can save you hundreds—sometimes thousands—of dollars a year-especially if you are a big family. For years, when I saw that title, I thought it was merely bulk cleaning supplies for businesses or something. Eventually, our family got so big that one day, I realized we needed to start buying industrial kitchen tools, and that’s when the secret grocery store aisle caught my eye!

The day I decided to take a gander down that industrial aisle, life was never the same again!

Some grocery stores have full aisles dedicated to industrial, some only have a section within an aisle. I’ve seen them at Walmart, and various grocery stores elsewhere.

If your grocery store does not have one, you can always ask to speak with the manager; many times, they are actually able to order bulk foods in for people, at a discounted price.

Buying in bulk is a huge blessing for our big family, especially as we enter the baking season. This month, I stocked up on beans, grains, and a few baking staples from Azure Standard.

TIP! When you buy bulk foods like from Azure or the industrial section of the store, don’t just leave them in the bags they come in. Always open them up, check for freshness, make sure there are no bugs, and repackage them into jars or buckets for long-term storage.

You can watch the video to see what I bought and how I’m feeding our family of 8 for just $13 a day, with zero complaints, and delicious nutrition.

My Story: From Bean Burnout to “Queen of Beans”

Now, by far, beans and rice are the best way to stretch your dollars. Of course there are also potatoes, but that is another blog post of it’s own. Today we are going to focus on beans. How boring, right?

Story Time

Now, I wasn’t always a fan of beans. About ten years ago, we were dirt poor. Beans were about all we could afford, and I didn’t know many ways to cook them. After eating them for what felt like an eternity, I remember thinking, “If I see one more pot of beans, I’m going to cry.”

Alas, I did see another pot of beans, and yes, pretty sure I cried.

But something changed over the years. I started learning new ways to season and cook them—from Indian to Mexican, Cuban to Southern BBQ, Italian to classic American soups. I went from bean burnout to bean brilliance. These humble little legumes became the secret to how I feed my family so affordably—and deliciously. I like to say that I can cook beans from east to west and north to south now!

Here are just a few of our Bean favorites:

When you season beans well and mix up the flavors, they stop feeling like budget food—and start feeling like comfort food.

Smart Homemaking: Stretching Meals & Stocking Wisely

Bulk cooking is my secret weapon. I cook large batches of beans, freeze or pressure-can them, and use them in soups, tacos, casseroles, or alongside veggies from the garden or with dried/frozen in the winter. Cooking from scratch means I know exactly what’s going into my family’s bodies—especially important since we deal with some food allergies at home.

If you are looking to buy from Azure, some of my favorite Azure staples include palm fruit shortening (wonderful for soft homemade sandwich breads-BTW, you can take my bread-making course on Patreon for just $5 HERE), whole wheat berries for fresh-ground flour, organic honey, and vanilla (Azure has the most affordable I’ve found). Buying these in bulk not only saves money but helps me stock up for long-term stability and peace of mind.

Even small shifts—like grinding your own wheat, or swapping canned beans for homemade—can make a big impact on your grocery budget.

How to store bulk foods

One issue people have with buying in bulk, is they do not know how to store bulk foods. Here are some of the options we use.

Conclusion, Faith, Food, and the Heart of Homemaking

For me, homemaking is more than just cooking. It’s an act of faithfulness. Even when our meals are simple, God blesses the work of our hands.

“She is like the merchant ships; she brings her food from afar.” — Proverbs 31:14

That’s us, mamas—gathering what we can, where we can, and turning it into something beautiful for our families.

Because homemaking isn’t just about feeding your family—it’s about building peace, provision, and stability in your home.

So grab a cozy cup of tea, mama, and remember: every meal you make, every jar you fill, every pot of beans you stir—it all matters. You are building something sacred, one humble meal at a time.
