Covenant Kids Book 1 THE LAW Book Review
About The Book
Covenant Kids, Book 1, THE LAW, is a comic style book about a new president that was elected (the country was unspecified). The new president in this book made it a law that the Bible could only be studied on Sunday’s, and in the book Christianity could not be spoken of during weekdays or outside of church. Law breakers were turned in to authorities, and the book ends with a man going missing.
This books primary purpose is to help children understand Gods love and that God wants to bring us into a loving relationship with Him through His word-the Bible.

What Did My Kids Think
The books tagline is “Learning the Bible Can be an Adventure”, and my oldest daughter (12) definitely felt like this this book delivered this promise! She began reading the book immediately and could not put it down. She’s eagerly anticipating the second book!
It took some prodding to get my son to read the book, he’s in 9th grade and he wasn’t into comic style books. Once he read the book, however, he was hooked. He too cannot wait for book 2 and he felt like this is a good book for other kids to read.
What I Thought
Growing up, I was raised in a very legalistic religion where the majority of people had a “Gloom and Doom-the world is going to end soon” outlook. I remember church Sundays for me were filled with people sharing hours worth of conspiracy theories and ridiculous and even frightening predictions for the future that never came true. As you can imagine, this proved to be a poor experience for the teens I knew. The lack of hope and vision for the future caused so many of the kids raised in the church I came from to turn from Christianity altogether.
Because of this experience at such an impressionable age I am pretty careful with my kids and we strive to keep a balanced view of the world. We also strive to look at things with hope and through the eyes of Jesus. I try very hard to instill vision and purpose in my children and I encourage them to have hope that they can make a positive difference in this world.
So when this book first arrived and I glanced it over, memories from conspiracy theories from my teen years came back and I felt like the book looked a little “heavy“.
As fate would have it, a week before writing this article I met an interesting woman from the Ukraine at one of our town’s yearly events, and after hearing her story my perspective of Covenant Kids Book and it being “too heavy” was changed.
A Piece of Ukrainian History
My daughter and I were perusing vendors and looking for some good street food when we saw a vendor with a heavy Russian accent that I had bought some food off of before. For the privacy purposes I’ll just call her O for this post.
I knew my daughter would like O’s food so we went to her stand to eat.
We could tell she’d had a busy day. She was down to just a small amount of food so she actually kindly gave my daughter one of her pierogis because she said they had been overcooked slightly but were still good.
As I thanked her and we chatted her heavy accent got the best of me and I couldn’t resist asking what brought her to America.
That’s when she shared her story with me, of how Christians endured many horrifying persecutions in the Ukraine for many decades. When she was finished both she and I had tears in our eyes.
She told me she and her husband left the Ukraine as soon as they were married. She elatedly spoke of how her two children were US citizens.
Perhaps it’s needless to say, but after hearing her story, our hearts were pierced. That’s when my daughter remarked, “It’s just like the Covenant Kids book!”
My Final Thoughts
After that, I no longer feel like Covenant Kids Book 1, The Law, was a “heavy” read. Instead, I view this book as a lighter way to introduce middle school aged kids to a heavy and sad topic they are going to learn about eventually. Now I look at this book as a teaching opportunity.
In a culture that emphasizes focus on entertainment, consumerism, and every religion other than Christianity, we need to remember to teach our children the importance of being valuable, Christian citizens and contributors to society. I felt like this book was a gentle introduction for middle schoolers on the serious topic of why we humans need Christ and His love, and that we need to be alert and attentive to what is happening in our communities and country.
Of course I also saw it as an opportunity to remind them of previous studies we learned about from the book Window on the World which we read in our My Father’s World Curriculum two years ago, and how in that book we learned there were countries that did outlaw the Bible, Christianity, and worshiping Jesus Christ. We talked about how we are blessed to be able to worship Jesus in the USA! I reminded the children that we need to pray for people suffering in countries where Christianity is outlawed.
Another thing we talked about is how there sadly are people in our country who do misunderstand Christianity, as well as people who simply hate it, and who would like to see Christianity abolished. We talked about how we as Christians need to make sure we are paying attention to bills and laws being passed and that we use the language arts lessons we’ve had to eloquently voice our opinions with diplomacy.
I also Covenant Kids Book 1 as an opening to tell my kids that this is why the Bible teaches us to share the good news of Jesus and His love and His covenants with others. After all, Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life!!!
So would I recommend Covenant Kids Book 1, The Law for middle schoolers as well as high schoolers?? Absolutely.

Wow, this sounds intense, but like a great a conversation-starter for older kids. Mine are still pretty little, so this probably a ways off for them, but great to know this is out there for the future.
