TP Panic

Cheeky DIY Wipes And Toilet Paper Alternatives

I didn’t buy into the toilet paper panic for a couple reasons. One is because we’re a family of 8, so we stock up on a months worth of toilet paper each month, around the beginning of the month.

When I heard toilet paper was going as fast as lightning I wasn’t too worried because I knew we have enough for this month, but I decided maybe I should go to the store and pick up and extra package just to be safe.

I was too late.

I didn’t panic though. Why? Because when I was cloth diapering for my babies I made the most brilliant, eco friendly, and pocket book friendly discovery. Three words. Cloth DIY wipes.

Since I strive to be as sustainable as I can, our family tried DIY cloth toilet paper for awhile too.

Although I loved it because this method actually cleans vs dry cleans, my hubby had a little trouble getting used to the idea. Eventually we switched back but I still would use cloth wipes for the babies.

First & Foremost

Cheeky DIY Wipes And Toilet Paper Alternatives

There’s just a few really important things you NEED to do if you are going to do these Cheeky DIY Wipes And Toilet Paper Alternatives.

  1. Number one critical step is to get a small trash can with a lid to keep at the toilet for the toilet paper alternatives. You do NOT want these uncovered because we don’t need an outbreak of cholera and polio on top of the coronavirus outbreak. I recommend one like this.
  2. This will make eco friendly activists shudder, but I do recommend having bleach on hand to add to the wash cycle when it comes time to wash the wipes. I don’t think I need to explain why.
  3. For sanitary purposes, you might want to keep small plastic bags on hand to line your trash cans with.
  4. Consider getting Peri bottles so you don’t have to constantly be wetting the cloths (pun totally not intended).

First of all you’ll need fabric, or you can buy wash cloths (or towels and cut them into wash cloth sizes). You can buy it, or use what you have. Idea’s for fabric include old tee shirts, old sheets (the tee shirt material ones work best), and old towels. Don’t forget to check second hand stores for the nice tee shirt material sheets. The tee shirt material seems to work the best.

Second you will want to cut your fabric to size. Don’t make them too small. Seriously, don’t. Eight square inches is probably the safe size.

You can keep a basket of your wipes at the toilet, or if you want to take things a step further you can put them in a sealable plastic bag and add water so you are prepared. This is best for wet wipes. Of course this would be a little cold, so you might just want to wait to wet the cloths and wipes as you need them!

Of course if you use the recommended peri bottles in place of toilet paper your cloths will stay much cleaner since you’ll mainly be using them to dry off with.

It is my hope that this post has saved someones a** somewhere out there. And who knows, you might like DIY Wipes And Toilet Paper Alternatives so much that you never go back!

  1. Love this DIY! Thankfully we were able to get our hands on TP and paper towels, but I felt so bad for those who couldn’t!

  2. Not only is this brilliant – it’s downright necessary. Esp now. So good that there are options and ideas that can help the crisis we’re having right now. So glad to have seen this!

  3. I am glad I had a friend drop off some toilet paper. I haven’t been able to find any! I don’t think I could do reusable though. I’d gag. I know many people do it, but it’s not for me.

  4. I used to do this when my babies were little. I guess I was ahead of the times! Who knew knowing how to do DIY wet wipes would come in handy 🙂

  5. Your bathroom makes the idea of cleaning with a cloth and peri bottle book so comforting! Hard times call for hard measures but might as well do it comfortably.

  6. The TP problem is so crazy to me! I just can’t get over it. This is awesome though as an alternative.

This is such a great idea for us who have run out toilet paper and can’t get any due to panic shoppers.

  8. I still don’t understand the toilet paper craze that some people are going through, but this is such a great alternative!

  9. I’ve never thought of making my own wipes before! It’s something I’m definitely going to have to try while we’re in isolation 🙂

  10. Great post. I used flannel squares as baby wipes when I was cloth diapering my babies. It is so nice to know that there are alternatives to toilet paper and wipes so we don’t need to panic.

What a timely post! The grocery stores still didn’t have toilet paper yesterday, and my husband said that people existed and lived just fine before the invention if toilet paper. I thought to myself that we could cut up t-shirts for toilet paper, but the thought of re-washing them gives me the heebie jeebies. LOL

What do you think? I really want to know! If you have feedback or something to add to this post let's hear it!
