So far, my lifestyle blog posts seem to be the most popular by far, so I figured it’s past time to create another lifestyle post and I decided it might be fun for you all if I feature our Black White and Wood Kitchen Makeover.

UPDATE; we recently made more advancements in our kitchen remodel project, be sure to see all the new things we’ve done (including installing open shelving) in our LATEST KITCHEN REMODEL HERE.

Okay, so when we first moved in last year I had plans to paint this kitchen, but by the time we were all finished getting settled I decided to try the all wood look out for awhile. My husband and I are both fans of wood, and so I thought maybe we might just leave it. Eventually we realized we needed to do something to some of the cabinet doors, either paint or clear coat, because they were showing wear.

Although John and I are both fans of wood, eventually we admitted we were not fans of THIS particular color of wood. We’re more fans of walnut, hickory, and woods with lot’s of color and variations.

This wood was was very plain, and “vanilla”. There was no character to it. We also really didn’t like how it blended in with the floor but was a few shades off so to us it didn’t really “flow” to us.

At first I decided to remove some of the upper cabinet doors to see if the open shelving look would work. I did this for a couple reasons. One is because I’m a kitchen minimalist, and unfortunately some of my best and needed casserole pans were taking hits. Two Pampered Chef pans were broken within a week! Whaaaaaaaa!!!!

So to replace them I found these beautiful casserole pans by the Pioneer Woman. They were way too pretty to hide away in a cabinet!

I felt like removing the cabinet doors helped matters. But still we needed something more.

Finally, about a month later I hosted a family brunch. Over mimosas I asked my brother who is a Kraftsman cabinet specialist what his professional opinion of the kitchen was. He agreed, the kitchen needed something, and paint would help update it.

We all agreed a shade of white would be best. So we bought some white. After we made it around the upper cabinets and decided we liked that, I started on the lower. My husband and I HATED the white on the lower though! It looked too plain and cookie cutter or something. It was jarring to our eyes. I’m sorry, I didn’t get a picture. All I could think about was making the look go away.

So that’s when we looked around on Pinterest together. Finally, I admitted what was supposed to be taboo (according to my bro). I cannot remember if John or I said it first, but as we were looking we both honed in on the SAME types of kitchens.

Two tone.

Dark bottoms, white uppers, wood counter tops. Technically, that’s three tone, which is not two, so it’s okay, right?

I thought it was neat my hubby and I were both silently loving the same looks! We decided that even tho my brother advised not to go two tone, we couldn’t resist. John and I both just really loved the look!

Getting the right shade for the bottom though was really tricky.

These are the chairs I tried matching paint to-the results were disastrous.

We had one failed attempt at finding the right color. We tried matching the paint to chairs in the dining room but the problem was that there apparently were variations in the chairs, so the resulting color was dark brown and that was a no go for both of us.

I was starting to get frustrated. My pet peeve is unfinished projects. We used to live in a house that was constantly under construction for 6 years. Drove. Me. Batty.

I was starting to get the “just get it done” attitude. At this point I had already painted the dining room facing side of the cabinet chalkboard paint. This was my sister in law’s idea. Chalkboard paint is just too cool, so she and I didn’t ask my brother his opinion on this either.

Finally, John and I talked about it some more and discussed that we both loved the chalkboard painted side in contrast with everything. I was worried black would be, you know, black. Finally, I realized, “What are we worried about? John and I both love black and white.”

So we did it. According to my bro, it does make it appear a little smaller, but that’s okay because the kids, John and I really love it!

We felt the colors complimented the wooden counter-tops so beautifully!

  1. Great Kitchen, I don’t really cook so i don’t stay in the kitchen that much but i wont mind a Kitchen as gorgeous as this. I love the black and wooden accent and especially the rose gold lighting!

  2. This is absolutely lovely! I agree that the black and white definitely compliment the wooden tops! Y’all did a great job

  3. I love that you guys did what you wanted despite what your brother thought. I think the two-tone is really unique, not something you see often at all!

What do you think? I really want to know! If you have feedback or something to add to this post let's hear it!
