Beauty Tips for Women Over 35 was going to be Beauty Tips for Women Over 40. As I was planning this post, however, I realized that many of the tips included here are ones I started using in my latter 30’s, and the the ones I was not using I probably should have been!

I’m super excited to share Beauty Tips for Women Over 35 with you, it’s been a LOT of hard work, research, and even years of experience through trial and error on my part! But beauty and style are two things I enjoy learning and sharing so it has been super fun!

The Aging Woman

Okay, so I don’t know about you, but I think my least favorite thing about being in my 40’s is that it takes more time and effort to look my best and I’m only in my very early 40’s! Eyiyi.

I’ve found that the past few years left me needing to learn beauty tips for women over 35 (things like how to to wear eyeshadow for drooping eyes).

I would like to begin with saying that I personally am not a professional cosmetologist (this is also a disclaimer), but I am really big on going to one for makeup color suggestions and application suggestions every few years.

When I do I always walk away with great information (much of which I’m including here today). That info helps keep me from applying makeup incorrectly for my age, which would result in looking tacky and like I don’t know what I’m doing!

Going to a pro also saves me a lot of money because a pro takes the guesswork out of trying to figure out what would be the best product and shades and so on. So often what the professionals recommend is not what I would have thought would have been right for me, but they have always been right!

Beauty Tips for Women Over 35 Video

You can read this entire post, however I made it super easy for you! In addition to the transcript below (which includes suggested product links) I’ve decided to invite you into my beauty routine and SHOW you how I roll. Here’s the video….Please don’t forget to hop over to my YouTube channel and like my video and subscribe!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K9kSzKLkJY

Please note, for the video I put on a little more than I normally do because the camera always washes people out. So although you see me putting on a lot I don’t normally. In fact, I’ve found that as I age less is definitely more, and a more natural look looks way better at my age (over 40).

Makeup Routine

A little hack I’ve learned is to keep unscented makeup or baby wipes nearby when I’m putting my makeup on. I like to do this to keep my hands less germy (and therefore hopefully keep bacteria counts lower in my makeup). But another reason is so makeup colors don’t contaminate each other and so that wrong colors don’t end up in the wrong places on my face. Another reason I like to use them is to lightly clean brushes as I am going

Primer

I use Colorless Mineral Foundation Primer by Southern Magnolia Minerals (SMM).

I love how it helps prepare the skin for makeup and causes the makeup to glide on more smoothly. I also find it smooths the skin so much that I can use less foundation.

Perks are it’s anti-aging due to vitamins & antioxidants that actually do what the product promises and improves look of fine lines. It’s perfectly smoothing, moisturizing and moisturize, smooth and protect bare skin give it extra shine and silkiness made without parabens, talc, gluten, or lanolin.

I love my eye lid primer by SMM but I just saw they discontinued it! I’ll be looking for another to recommend but if you don’t want to wait for me to try some HERE ARE SOME I’M EYEING (pun intended).

A Note About Brushes

I’m a huge fan of brushes for applying makeup (instead of sponges).

A note about brushes most people don’t know; when it comes to these you want to use natural bristle for powders and synthetic bristles for anything liquid.

You never want to use the natural bristle for liquid because the fibers soak up the product and won’t let go of it like synthetic will, so you won’t get very good coverage and will end up losing a lot of product in the brush, which goes rancid after awhile.

On the other hand you want to use natural bristle for powders because these pick up more powder product than a synthetic brush and let go of it where you want, distributing it perfectly on the face.

I purchased this very affordable synthetic brush kit below in 2018 and it has proven to be perfect quality.

I have a friend with a makeup business, I like using her blush and she has some amazing brushes for powders. They are natural bristle and very high quality.

Foundation

I always use a brush to apply foundation and I think once you give it a try you’ll love it too! I found that after 35 I was having a lot of trouble applying foundation and getting it even and looking right but once I started using a brush most my problems with it went away (the rest left after I started using primer). I like how the brush uses less foundation, and gives a perfect application. Don’t forget you want a synthetic brush for cream foundation.

I used to use powder but I found that after I hit age 35 powder began settling in my fine lines and dried my skin out as I aged. I use the Age Defying Antioxidant Creme Foundation from SMM and love it. It’s great for problem skin, allows the skin to still breath, doesn’t feel cakey, moisturizes, and never breaks my skin out. It is medium to full coverage but SMM does have lighter coverage options.

Eyebrows

Okay, by age 35 you hopefully haven’t overplucked your brows through your 20’s and early 30’s and still have some left. Chances are, if you are like most women you did over pluck though!

Thinning eyebrows definitely becomes more of an issue for women around the age 40 range.

I always had the most trouble with my eyebrows and am still no pro, but ever since I learned the tips in the video included here for women over 40 I’ve been having much better results!

In the video they talk about how for a natural look you want to brush the brow down (not up) and fill in the top with a pencil. Afterwards brush them up and fill in from the bottom.

Eyeshadow

Before I talk about eyeshadow, one of the best beauty tips for women over 35 that I can give is to wear eye cream. In fact, did you know it’s recommended to start wearing eye cream in your 20’s? I wish I had!

As you age three things happen to your eyes. Your eyes, for whatever reason start to appear smaller, your eyelids begin to sag, and your eyelashes thin.

Because of this I’ve found the eyes are so important to give a little help to, and when you do help them out it can really improve your look!

Since I have dark brown eyes I am supposed to be able to pull “any color”, but I’ve not always found this to be true. In the last few years, I’ve also noticed that shimmery eyeshadow is a no go. I accentuates age and dramatically enhances fine lines!

I have asymmetrical brows and brow bones so I have to do a lot of work to my eyes when I wear shadow to make them appear even and keep from accentuating the unevenness! For this reason I don’t wear eyeshadow very often, because it takes so long to get right.

In the video I created here for you I show how I do my shadow, and it seems to work well for eyelids that are starting to sag.

For highlighter on my brow bone I like to use a powder foundation (the wheat shade) that’s the same color as my skin and I also use it to smooth out mistakes.

When it comes to eyeshadow I definitely listen to the pros and if you are not sure what your go to shades would be I would definitely talk to a pro!

The a professional recommended for me as everyday subtle colors are taupe, eggplant, and wheat shades.

Eyeliner

Perhaps my favorite of the beauty tips for women over 35 is eyeliner. This is something I found to help the eyes that really vamped my look up. It was hard to learn how to put on but I kept practicing and finally learned how. It probably took 8 times before I figured it out.

The perks of liquid eyeliner are that you can be way more precise with it, as opposed to a pencil.

If you have lighter lashes you do not want black, you’ll want to opt for a lighter brown or charcoal grey.

For dimension, I like to use a lighter color eyeliner on the bottom of my eyes and then I smudge to soften the line as shown in the video. Another thing I like to do is just use the darker eyeshadow that I used on my top lid on the bottom lid and often find that is a good look for my eyes.

TIP! Make sure you put the liner in or above the bottom lash line for a more natural look, and don’t forget to soften it! If you don’t it’ll look like that black streak some of us are familiar with (which is the reason many women don’t wear liner, lol).

I found this liner that is on the EWG safe list, which is super exciting!

Mascara

For mascara, again for dimension I use black on top and dark brown on the bottom lashes. I love and use JennyAnns mascara, its amazing and the ingredients are non toxic.

Contouring

At this point I like to do a little contouring on my nose. I broke my nose when I was around ten so I like to try to even it out a little!

In the picture below you can really tell my nose was broken at some point (it’s a long and rather funny story-I’ll share it another day).

Also I have a prominent nose and so I like to minimize it if I can with contouring. For contouring I generally like to use a darker shade of powder foundation by JennyAnn’s. I get the Deep Tan for this.

By the way, if you go to YouTube and search “Contouring and Highlights for Mature” faces you’ll hit a jackpot of helpful videos!

I really liked THIS ONE by Hot & Flashy, and I recommend subscribing to her channel because she’s 50 and got some excellent videos that are super helpful.

Blush

One of my favorite things about mineral blush is how forgiving it is. If you get a shade that’s not quite your shade it’s easy to blend and make look good.

In the video I used JennyAnn’s Bronzed Pink but I also love the Medium Tan foundation for blush.

I always use JennyAnn’s for blush because it’s not cakey, not oily, seems to help with dryness and it’s non-comedogenic (does not block the pores of the skin and cause breakouts).

Don’t forget, for powder blush use a natural bristle brush (I LOVE THIS ONE)!

Lipstick

Lipstick, I have a whole post on how to apply lipstick with some tips and tricks for busy moms. READ IT HERE.

My hands down favorite lipstick is by Southern Magnolia minerals. The colors they have are rich, their lipstick doesn’t feather, it stays put, lasts for most the day, it’s smooth, and contains antioxidants.

I generally like to use a brush, especially if I’m putting a bold color on.
SMM

Hair, Face, & Body Care

I’ve got a couple products I love for the body here. One is a self tanner by Nature’s Gate.

The product for skin smoothing I talked about in the video is Cell-Lite-Magic by Young Living (I’ve been a YL fan since 1996).

For the face I absolutely love Young Living’s Sandalwood Moisturizer, as well as the Wolfberry Eye Cream.

FIND THESE HERE or HERE.

FYI if you would like to join my Young Living team I have a TON of resources I’ve created to help support your journey to a healthier lifestyle. You can request a temporary pass to my Essential Members group to look at all I have for you and decide if Young Living would be right for you.

For hair, I’ve always had the best results with Desert Essence. This stuff helps my hair stay silky and when I stop using it I start having issues. I love all their shampoo and conditioners but my favorite is this one….

Here is a hairbrush similar to the one I talked about. I love how if I find a tangle it’s easy to remove the brush without damaging or pulling out any hair with this type of brush. I also believe it helps keep hair looking silky smooth because it distributes natural oils through to the ends.

Pulling It All Together

Okay Ladies, I’m going to be super honest. I only wear a full face of makeup maybe once a month any more. I even leave the house without makeup at least half the time I go out.

I always notice, however, that when I put some effort in to wear at least a little that I feel so much better about myself. I especially love getting dolled up for my family. I cannot explain it, but it seems to brighten their attitudes when I do. Go figure!

Here are some shots of of some of my favorite looks-basically all that changes is the lipstick (ah, the power of lipstick)!

Beauty Tips for Women Over 40

Here is the video I told you all about. It’s great and packed with WONDERFUL tips and suggestions for women over 40-some of which women should start using in their 30’s.

Closing Note About Non Toxic Cosmetics

With the exception of some of my hair products, which I’m looking to switch out (I’d love hearing your suggestions), I’m a huge believer in a non-toxic lifestyle, and non toxic cosmetics are no exception. I highly recommend that you get the THINK DIRTY app and scan your bath and beauty products. You’ll be surprised to learn of all the reproductive, cancer causing ingredients in products we slather on everyday! It’s really frightening. So many of the products I’ve scanned can actually speed aging too, so my biggest beauty tip for the day is to KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PUTTING ON YOUR SKIN!

Since I’ve lost loved ones to cancer and other diseases I’m very careful about what I put on my body and allow in my home, so as you are scrolling through you’ll see most of my suggestions here are non toxic, pure, plant based and mineral based.

If you would like to know more about toxins and unsafe ingredients used in the USA check out the Environmental Working Group and be sure to watch the lecture 10 Americans by Ken Cook where he share’s data released exposing how babies are being born with chemicals in their bodies from ingredients in the environment and products we use.

Have you enjoyed Beauty Tips for Women Over 35? Drop a comment and let me know what you think! Oh, and don’t forget if you have some organic, plant based non toxic suggestions for hair care I’m looking so drop your suggestions below!
