A Simply Natural Hygee Christmas

A Simply Natural Hygee Christmas

I was inspired to do a simply natural hygee Christmas this year for a few reasons. One is because this would flow with our boho, natural home style. Another reason is affordability, which was a big motivator! But another reason is because I’ve been completely swooning the more nature themed, simplicity of the hygee homes and styles, especially during the winter. I love that the Scandi “flavors” combine nicely with a Boho home and that they have a way of brightening and cozying up the place long before and after Christmas! It’s been so enjoyable preparing A Simply Natural Hygee Christmas!

I decided to decorate early this year, partly because I started finding gifts in October and didn’t want the kids to find them so it only made sense to wrap them sooner and set them out!

Another reason is because I don’t know about you, but because of the pandemic I’ve not seen some of my family members that I normally see during the holidays and I’ve been so bummed about it. I NEEDED something to cheer me, like right now, and I didn’t want to wait!

But this decision was also made because winter came early for us. We had our first snow storm on October 23rd, and it snowed 6 inches! Fun story; I had to go into town during our first snowstorm. Our oldest son had an appointment that I needed to drive him to and my husband was having a wisdom tooth pulled, plus there were a few things I needed to get for him and the weekend. The streets were sloppy and many were unpaved. Some towns you would not want to drive around in during a snowstorm, but one of the things I love about our town is that everybody that lives around here is used to it. All the snow did was slow people down slightly.

Anyways, it was so beautiful and it got me in the Christmas mood!

Minimizing & Simplifying

Before we decorated for Christmas I worked awhile on minimizing and de-cluttering spaces. I knew that Christmas decor would make the place feel really cluttered if I didn’t remove some things first. So I put some of our items away in storage so that it wouldn’t get too busy on the eyes in November and December.

This year I got a head start on Christmas which simplified things tremendously in the cost department as well as prep. I highly recommend doing that if you are trying to keep costs down because starting early really helped with that! As mentioned I started shopping for gifts in October when I found an awesome clearance sale on Legos.

Environmentally Friendly Wrapping Paper Alternative

Wrapping Paper Alternative

Instead of buying wrapping paper that we would just throw away I put my thinking cap on and came up with some better ideas. I decided that instead we would use fabric scraps as wrapping paper! I actually had some sheets that had become unusable due to holes, and so I decided to repurpose them, but I also had some fabric that used to be curtains and I used some of it too. The best thing of all about using fabric for wrapping paper is that it is re-usable! I’ll simply keep the fabric stashed away with the rest of the Christmas décor.

If you don’t have scrap fabric, or if you don’t like the scrap fabric you have you could also use pillow cases. Just tie them shut with string or ribbon.

If you would like another option, I have an aunt who wraps gifts in comics or newspaper. The only reason I didn’t do this is because I didn’t want to be staring at newspapers for weeks until Christmas!

FYI, did you know that a lot of wrapping paper isn’t recyclable? If you still want to stick with wrapping paper check out KRAFT WRAPPING PAPER HERE. It’s super duper affordable,  Eco-Friendly since it’s made from recycled paper without wax and it’s recyclable.

Minimalistic Décor

The main décor I went with this year is very simple.

Warm white lights were a must have, especially since I already had most of them. I love how these add a cozy cheer to spaces during the long northern winters. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a real thing where we live and I guess I feel like things like this help.

I also love that the white lights can be left up all winter long to brighten spaces and bring that hygee sort of warmth-and that they come in LED options for energy efficiency now.

I’ve been eyeing wooden bead garlands for awhile, and then I saw bead icicles on Pinterest! I jumped on the idea of making these because for one they are super affordable and for two I knew making these would be a fun project for the younger children. I knew making them would help me teach my youngest daughter more about patterns too. She’s been having trouble grasping “patterns” in her math lessons lately and so I knew these would be a manipulative that would help her with this.

Recently we turned our black chalkboard white. It was so easy, I just bought some chalk powder on Amazon and mixed it with water and paint-although you could also buy white chalkboard paint. The kids were disappointed when I told them I was painting the chalkboard but when they heard I was using a chalk paint they could write with they were happy again! So we are decorating the chalkboard a lot since it’s easy and we have it. I found black chalk that works perfectly with it.

Of course orange and cranberry garlands were a must! They are super inexpensive and fun to make, and aren’t they so pretty?!

Pinecones are among the decor- I wasn’t gong to add them this year but the kids wouldn’t hear of that so….we have pinecones.

I’ve had these moss trees that I made years ago, they are one of my favorite nature themed Christmas decorations!

Eventually I would love to find some cedar branches and make a garland like I did the first year we were here. I absolutely love how cedar branches smell and how they liven up the place!

I’ve not yet had the time to do this though and may have to skip it this year. Oh well, I do have enough without it!

So tell me, what is your décor theme this year? What is your favorite Christmas decor theme of all? I’d love to hear in the comments below!

  1. My tree is up but I still need more decor around the house. I like a minimalist style too. Not sure if I’ve reached it yet. I do love that orange garland. I’ve seen some tutorials for those on pinterest.

  2. I love the fabric wrapping paper idea! Once when I was a kid, my mom bought a whole bunch of bandanas and used them to wrap all of our small gifts for the next few years.

What do you think? I really want to know! If you have feedback or something to add to this post let's hear it!
