I thought these portable carts were the cat’s meow the instant I saw them! I seriously cannot get enough of them. They are so darn handy! Today I’m sharing 7 Of The Best Uses For Utility Carts that I’ve found using these so far.
Before I get started be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel when you are done here. I’m in the process of creating a video with another use I’ve found for utility carts that I really wish I would have discovered sooner! I’ll be publishing that post in the near future.
Lately we’ve been doing a little late spring/early summer cleaning. Overall, I love doing deep cleans. It always feels so good to dig in, clean and organize. I especially love how everything pertaining to life around the home goes so much more smoothly after a deep clean/organization/purge.
One of the area’s that always needs to be sorted and re-organized is my utility carts, especially the ones the younger kids use. While we were organizing this year I decided to go ahead write this post sharing how handy these carts are.

So far I’ve purchased 4 carts from different places in a variety of price ranges. I would not recommend buying one from Walmart, theirs is super flimsy and falls apart often. If you like the metal carts I recommend THIS ONE. It has held together the best and is sturdy. I also really like THIS ONE that looks like wood and iron, and I use it for my dishes.
7 Best Uses For Utility Carts
Portable Book Shelf
For the last year I’ve been using one of the carts as a bookshelf by my husbands chair. It’s loaded with books that he sometimes reads to the kids. We do this to keep it simple for him to teach a lesson on weekends or whenever he has the time and opportunity. Basically I put the homeschooling books in it that I have trouble making time for but that I really want the kids to go through with one of us.
Art Supplies
It is super handy keeping one of the carts for art supplies. I keeps them separate from everything else, and is nice because all we have to do on art day’s is wheel the cart up to the table.
Dishes
I have a super small boho eclectic kitchen, (read my small kitchen organization tips here)-so at the end of the island I have a cart just for dishes. It fits them all perfectly and the nice thing is we can wheel it to the table or dishwasher as needed.
Dish Drying Rack
Seriously, when you have a family as big as ours you need a big dish rack and this works perfectly!
Portable Party Tray
I love using a utility rack to make hosting casual dinner parties easier! Speaking of dinner parties be sure to catch my post How To Host A Casual Dinner Party! I even have a printable checklist there to make hosting your next party a breeze!
Plant Rack
I have 65 plants, and I’ve found utility carts are so handy for plants, especially on plant watering day. You can read about easy plants I recommend here.
Toys
This is currently one of my favorite uses for the cart at the present time. Since we like to find wooden toys for our little ones this means that their toys are often pretty to look at, and I love having them on display! Learn more about the educational and attractive toys we recommend here.

We have one that we use for homeschool supplies. It is so helpful!
Carts are so cute, I can’t believe I still don’t have one. I feel like I need a coffee or drink one.
Love all of these ideas! Specifically the idea for storing dishes — I actually have plans to get a utility cart and store all of my props (dishes / silverware / etc.) on them so they’re easy to move around for photo shoots!
This has given me some great ideas, we don’t own one of these carts but now I think we should!
I love them! They’re so cute in the kitchen. I’ll definitely get one!
I love these ideas. I might have to get one of these now. I’d use it in the kitchen.
I love them, I have one where I keep my coffee maker and cups
