3 Easy DIY Boho Terracotta Glass Methods

I discovered 3 easy DIY Boho terracotta glass methods as I was working on minimizing and simplifying our boho style home. It’s kinda a long story, and if you are a regular reader you know me! I’m gonna tell it!

Okay, so recently we made a huge leap forward in our kitchen renovation journey and we installed open shelving. I have a video sharing the process which was super fun. You can check it out on my YouTube channel.

Anyways, ever since then I have been enjoying styling my open shelves but one thing that I started noticing was how I enjoy the look of all of my glass jars when they are full, but I do not like the look of them when they are half and a quarter of the way full. For some reason they look messy to me if they are not full. Am I the only one who feels that way?

Anyways, one day I was perusing on Pinterest for a solution to this and I came across DIY terracotta glass. At first I wasn’t sold on the idea. Nevertheless I saved the pin and kept the idea rolling in the back of my brain for a couple weeks. One day I got to thinking about the terracotta glass again and I started thinking that perhaps that is what this shelf needed. So come up decided to give it a try.

I got the initial recipe from the blog Our Idaho Roots (which is a gorgeous blog BTW). In Zoey’s recipe baking soda was used and she used a more brownish and authentic color to create her terracotta look.

Although I liked the look of the baking soda method I kind of felt like the baking soda granules were just a little big for my taste. So I decided to try doing some with calcium carbonated powder instead since the particles in it are smaller. You could also use BON AMI powder cleanser available at most hardware stores. If I were you I would experiment with both the cleanser or calcium and baking soda because maybe you will like the baking soda look better.

I thought I would only use white, but I ended up loving the look and how they turned out so much that I went to the hardware store and picked up some dark terracotta paint so I could mix my own colors with white paint to add a slight variation in shades. I purchased the Do it Best brand and got their Best Look Porch And Floor Enamel in Red Chicory because it was really similar to terracotta to me but I liked it better. But seriously you could use any color you want. Here is a shot of my colors in case you want to get my exact look.

I started adding one spoonful of the Red Chicory at a time, painting a couple vases, and increasing the amount of Red Chicory to the same white base and darkening as I went.

I definitely recommend this project, it was so fun and really did spruce the space up, giving it a cleaner more minimalist boho vibe, which I’m a huge fan of.

I was a little worried that my husband would think a couple of the shades looked pink but he didn’t. As soon as he came in and saw what I had made he noticed what I had done and he admired the look! Yea!!!! I really dig it when that happens! Sometimes I think he thinks some of my ideas are a little out there so it’s always exciting for me when I land one he likes!

  1. This is so pretty! You did a wonderful job on the jars. Would love to give ours a facelift too. Thank you for the inspiration and the tutorial.

  2. What a neat idea! I love these colors. It looks so great all together and the colors are so relaxing. You have such a wonderful space!

  3. Interesting! I never would have thought to do this because I actually like the clear jars and being able to see the variety of ingredients, how much is left of each, and being able to easily identify what is in each jar a glance. Funny how everyone is different 🙂 Glad you were happy with your finished project!

  4. I love this idea! Looking for functional decor that fits the color theme of a room is such a struggle. Now, I can snatch up cool shapes and turn them into winning pieces. Thanks for sharing!
