In my Modern Boho Living Room {Winter Edition} post I introduced our latest home decor score from the Goodwill. I had a whole long story to go with it but the story made that post way too long. Around 1,00 words too long, lol! So I decided to share our disco ball discovery story in it’s own lifestyle post and share 3 cheery ways to decorate with a disco ball instead. FYI, this is not a minimalist post, lol.

Our Disco Ball Backstory

Before I share 3 cheery ways to decorate with a disco ball I’ve got to share the backstory with you!

I don’t remember the first time I saw my husband break into a disco. I do remember it was early in our marriage though. And pretty much every time since then when a Bee Gee’s song plays he breaks out momentarily in a disco again.

Apparently he learned it so he could dance sarcastically. Sometimes I wonder though.

The kids love it. They think it’s so funny that I’m pretty sure the oldest four can all do some disco moves. I’m positive they did learn them so they could dance sarcastically.

Their favorite, however, is when daddy does the walk to “Stayin’ Alive”. He always adds a little more something to his walk. I’m not sure what it is, but he does the walk better.

I had never really thought about getting a disco ball though until around a year ago. I was looking for interior design inspiration and I found Omandthecity by Jules Hunt. I love how she was combining plants and disco balls and how they brightened up a space, adding some retro charm. Ever since then I had been wanting one but I never told anybody. I mean, it’s not like they are in line with my minimalism motto.

Then one day we were Goodwill perusing when a couple of my mini me’s came running up to me with this disco ball exclaiming, “MOM!!!!! MOM!!!!! A DISCO BALL!!!!!!”

“OH MY GOSH!!” (me- envisioning this)

“YES! We are SO getting that! I’ve been wanting one!!!”

The kids were shocked. “REALLY”! They turned to each other, “WE’RE GETTING A DISCO BALL!!! SHE”S GOING TO GET IT!!”

I think they were envisioning this,

Sure enough, we got home and one of the boys proudly held the disco ball above his head started dancing disco.

Like father like son. The kid cracks me up. He didn’t know it but I got a video. I’m saving it for his future wedding someday.

Later, I wondered how odd we must have looked to bystanders as we stood in Goodwill celebrating the finding a disco ball.

Oh well. It’s not like having 6 kids and homeschooling is a recipe for blending in anyways.

I just love it when little things happen that remind me of how I married the right man for me. That day a reminder came through the disco ball.

When my hubby came home from work he saw it, and instead of questioning my sanity for buying a disco ball, of all things, he told us we should have hung it in the middle of the living room.

I love this man. I think he was joking, and he doesn’t know it but I totally took that as an invitation.

“I thought of that,” I said (which is true). “It’s too small, it would look weird. If we are going to do that we would need a bigger one to make it look right.”

I hung the disco ball in the west living room window to catch sunshine at the end of the day.

The week we got it was really cloudy, and I just couldn’t wait for the sun to shine and for the kids to see how it would sparkle up the room. I waited for almost a week for the sun to shine. Finally, one Saturday evening I was busy and the kids started exclaiming, “LOOK!”

The sun finally came out and lit up the ball!

The baby especially was in wonderland!

History of the Disco Ball

So just in case you wondering. Yes. In true homeschool fashion we had a history lesson on the disco ball. 😀

We always thought 60’s and 70’s when we saw disco balls, I mean, hello, DISCO ball, right?

But did you know that they actually came out in 1897 and that it was the use of them in nightclubs during the roaring 20’s that made them popular? I think they were called mirror or glitter balls back then.

I love little pieces of history like that!

3 Cheery Ways To Decorate With A Disco Ball

We just love how disco ball’s add a retro yet stylish and elegant charm to a room. So far, we’ve found 3 Cheery Ways To Decorate With A Disco Ball that we enjoy.

You can place them on surfaces where the sun shines through.

They are beautiful mixed in with plants….

Some people are even turning them into planters.

HERE’S A TUTORIAL on how to make one.

And of course a third way is to hang them up so they don’t have to be dusted around, lol! My preferred way to use them is hanging them in windows the sun shines in.

You can use them in any room (Bedroom, Living room, Dining room).

I love having one hang in our bedroom window because when the moon comes out it lights the ball up and cast very gentle “moon glitter” all over the bedroom!

My very favorite thing of all about having a disco ball though is hearing my kids get excited every time they walk in the room and the sun happens to be shining on it. They still get excited over the sparkles!
