  1. Use free grocery pickup services instead of shopping in store. This will save you from impulse purchases, plus it helps you to shop around for the best deals!

HOT TIP! Try a little experiment with online grocery services! Fill your online cart with your usual purchases. Instead of checking out, wait until you have shopped around town (don’t forget to bring your phone). When you are shopping around simply log in to your online grocery app, and go to your cart to quickly find the items you usually get. As you are shopping you can easily look to do price comparisons.
  2. Shop your pantry and freezers more often. I know this seems basic, but the thing is, according to many resources like THIS ONE, Americans waste nearly 6 million tons of food EVERY YEAR! That is, dare I say, shameful.

There are two ways to reduced this number. One is to properly store our food when we bring it home. Examples, don’t leave things like rice in the bag it came in, put it in a food storage container so bugs don’t take it over, and learn to wash your produce properly so it stays fresh for weeks and doesn’t spoil in two days like usual.
  3. Grow a garden if you can do so affordably. I say affordably because a lot of times if you crunch numbers it can be more expensive to garden, especially for town dwellers. Make sure you have crunched all your numbers before you leap on this one. Don’t forget to consider seed costs (Dollar store if things are super tight), water costs, fertilizer costs, food preservation methods and the costs.
  4. Learn to preserve your own food by canning, dehydrating and freezing. I love the Ball Books for this, FIND THEM HERE! You can do this even if you do not have a garden, just hit your community up for what is growing in abundance and ask for what people have extra of to get rid of.
  5. Learn from scratch cooking if you haven’t’ already. It’s healthier and far more affordable! Need idea’s? HERE IS MY SCRATCH COOKING PLAYLIST ON YT.
  6. Clean your fridge more often and use items before they go bad.
  7. Look into buying in bulk. We like places like Costco and Azure Standard for this, but some grocery stores have an industrial size aisle that is often overlooked. We’ve got at least two around us that have these sections. A couple examples of a major savings I find in the industrial section are salt and popcorn.
  8. Look into baking your own bread, it is by far more affordable than buying bread! Our family of 8 saves hundreds of dollars some months just by making our own bread. Reduce costs even more by learning sourdough. Don’t know how? LEARN HOW HERE or WATCH THIS VIDEO.
  9. Think outside the box when shopping for beans and grains, for example perhaps your family likes rice and pinto beans, but is quinoa or another type of bean cheaper or on sale this month?
  10. Last but by far from least! Menu plan after you shop sales! I know! This is contrary to what everyone else is saying. But I learned this from my Aunt Mary, it’s better on the pocket book to go shopping for the sales and then be creative and menu plan with the seasonal and sale items you found. If you find random things on sale and are not sure how to bring them together (for example say you found cannellini beans, bok choy and basil on sale), Google recipes for the ingredients you found and you’ll be shocked how many recipes are out there!
