Is your kitchen actually TOO perfect? Find out in this post as I share the #1 Kitchen organization mistake that so many of us make!
I’m sure we have all been guilty of this to some degree. It usually starts out with realizing that an area, or area’s, of our kitchen are simply not working.
Knowing we need to figure out how to better organize the problem spaces, we hit Pinterest, or some other social media platform for ideas and suggestions.
That’s when we fall for the pristine, color-matching, beautifully organized kitchens and pantries flooding social media. Not realizing the images we are looking at are often staged by influencers just hoping we will click “buy”, we buy a few of (or I suppose some people buy all of) the suggested organization pieces hoping they cure our disorganized kitchen spaces.
Sometimes the items really do work for us. But, alas, sometimes and often times they don’t.
Is Your Kitchen Actually TOO Perfect?
When organization pieces don’t work out, it is usually for one reason. We are trying to be TOO organized. We are trying to make the kitchen TOO perfect.
The biggest organization lesson I’ve learned is one I shared in THIS video and THIS video (I’ll share below for you).
The lesson is, no organization method will work if it is too much trouble.
This can apply in so many different ways. One of them is if a piece is too much trouble to get into, you won’t use it. Another way this applies is if you organize a space in a way that looks good but is too much trouble to navigate or use, it won’t last.
#1 Kitchen Organization Mistake
When it comes to kitchen organization the #1 Kitchen Organization Mistake I have made and that I see so many people making, is trying to make that Pinterest perfect, Instagram perfect, clutter-free, PERFECT kitchen look, but the actual result is a kitchen that is not efficient at all, and one that is a hassle to cook in.
How To Create The Most Organized Kitchen
The key to creating the most organized kitchen is by knowing ourselves, how we like to move around our kitchen, knowing our cooking habits and needs, and spending time in the kitchen. Only by spending time in the kitchen, and paying attention to how we like to operate in the space and to our personal workflow are we able to create the perfectly organized kitchen for us.
This is why when we try to emulate something we see someone else doing, it oftentimes doesn’t work for us.
Another thing to consider is each kitchen has its own unique layout, which is part of why when we try to recreate a system we see online, it usually doesn’t work out. Another reason is because we are all individual, unique people with our own habits & preferences for how we like things to be.
In my experience, it takes some time to get to know a new kitchen. It takes spending time moving around and cooking in the kitchen to discover where best to set stations for certain activities. Sometimes, it takes experimentation and trial and error.
It’s a mistake to set things up a certain way, expect it to work without giving it some time and thought to see if the set up is the most efficient way of doing things for us.
One of the biggest cautions I have for you is NEVER spend too much money on organization pieces until you have used the space awhile and are POSITIVE you have things semi-set up the way you want them. Instead of buying expensive Home Edit bins, use cheap or free boxes until you are sure you have things how you want them.
